Our Church

Emmanuel Baptist Church of Jesus Christ was organized under the leadership of Pastor R. D. Carrington, Sr. with 169 charter members in September of 1983. After meeting at the L.L. Melton YMCA for two months, Emmanuel moved into its current Worship Center and accompanying classrooms and offices located at 2580 West Lucas Street.  About 7 years later, Emmanuel built a Children’s Center on the rear of the property which initially doubled as classrooms and offices. In 1995, administrative offices moved to the house purchased at 2570 West Lucas, and the Children’s Center housed our newly established Academy for Gifted Children.  This property—2570 West Lucas—in addition to housing the current office building, also is now home to a playground constructed for the children and additional parking.

As the church continued to grow and mature, Emmanuel saw a need for the development of a childcare center and preschool.  After much prayer and planning, the Academy for Gifted Children opened its doors on August 15, 1995.  After 23 years of year-round ministry, the Academy closed for restructuring on April 30, 2018.  The church will begin planning for reopening in the Fall of 2019.

In 2014, Emmanuel began construction on a portion of its 42 acre property located at 2725 Major Drive.  The Major Drive property will be home to a new Worship Center, multipurpose building, warehouse facility, educational space, 40 garden homes for senior citizens, and 50 individual residences.

Emmanuel also seeks to maintain an active presence in our community.  We are a life member of the local and national chapters of the NAACP, members of the Chamber of Commerce, and supporters of the local educational community through the offering of educational programs and scholarships to local students that are both members and nonmembers of our church.

With one hand extended to God in adoration and dependence, and the other hand extended out to our brothers and sisters - believers and non-believers - in love, Emmanuel is now celebrating its 35th year of worshipping God, maturing disciples, witnessing of Jesus and his love, and fellowshipping with the saints.
